David Street Drawing Room in Chicago – Anne Wilson’s studio

The Davis Street Drawing Room functions as both a studio and a formal archive, housing lace fragments, rolled linens, worn cloth, and glass bobbins—materials central to Anne Wilson's artistic practice. It is also a space dedicated to close observation, drawing, research, and writing, exploring how sustained attention can spark complexity, critical thinking, and creative invention.

During our visit, research assistant Sofia Fernandez Diaz introduced us to the history of the 1887 studio building, the origins of the textiles, and the ways in which Wilson incorporates them into her work.

Lynne Heller, Dorie Millerson, and I engaged with the textiles using sometimes drawing tools, digital microscopes, hand magnifiers, and direct examination, uncovering the intricate thread structures, textures, and interlacements, while also consulting books on textile history and construction.
