Thinking/Sinking Into The Folds of Craft and the Digital Turn

This project employed Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) and VR for data visualization, integrating participants’ personal narratives, theoretical frameworks, and qualitative analysis to create an immersive and intellectually engaging experience. The creation of a VR experience translated the narratives of faculty, technicians, and students working in craft across Canada. We surveyed the community to understand their interactions, hopes, and challenges with digital tools, processes, and networks. Using these insights, we developed a landscape, soundscape, and interactive environment situated within the Canadian landscape and institutional architectures.

Presented at the “Mend, Blend, Attend" conference” (13th SAR International Conference on Artistic Research), held at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, 2022.

Presented at DesignTO, 2023

A related-paper was published in Mend, Blend, Attend: Advancing Artistic Research (SAR), 2024: view the PDF document. It reflects on the learning curve involved in shaping the VR world in response to qualitative data, examining the conceptual and artistic choices that produced a work representing the researchers, the community, and the project’s values. It also compares traditional craft-based teaching and learning with the joys and challenges of digital immersion, while considering future aspirations for practice.

Research project created as part of Craft and the Digital Turn.
